Sotogrande is situated in the province of Cádiz very close to San Roque and Gibraltar. It is one of the most elegant and sought after locations in Southern Spain, with an exclusive marina surrounded by beautifully situated bars and restaurants.
Santa María Polo Club has a total of nine playing fields, and the first one, ́La Playa`, was created in 1965 with the support of Enrique Zobel, a member of a well respected Spanish Filipino business family. It took another two years before the first polo tournaments were played, and these were generally small competitions played between families and groups of friends.
Since the inauguration of the Santa María Polo Club in 1967, many important tournaments are played there every year. The renowned Gold Cup was first held in 1971 and to this day is very much a major fixture in the polo calendar. In 1990 the Summer Polo Tournament became a sponsored, professional event and there are now more than 30 teams and 1,000 horses competing, with many well known competitors from around the world.
The nine fields of the club are situated in three different locations – Los Pinos, Río Sotogrande, and Puente de Hierro with the stables also being located here. Within the stable area, there is a large specialised training arena for the horses and riders, this, and all stables are connected to a communications network via a sophisticated video surveillance system.

The word derives from Greek and literally means ́treatment with the help of the horse`.
